KUALA LUMPUR: A group of 50 people surprised Christmas shoppers at Suria KLCC here with a flashmob act to protest against the Peaceful Assembly Bill.

They dispersed after about 45 minutes of chanting, singing Christmas songs and giving out cupcakes and sweets.

Vienna Looi, one of the organisers, said the aim of their stunt was not only to overturn the Bill but also to show that such protests would not harm business.

“We were told our protest would be disruptive to businesses and compromise public safety. We are here to prove that is not the case,” she said after the gathering, which started at about 2pm yesterday.

She is one of seven people named in a legal notice by lawyers for the KLCC management, which had claimed two previous gatherings by opponents of the Bill had disrupted the business operations of KLCC tenants. The notice was sent to the organisers via Facebook.

The KLCC management security personnel kept a close watch on the flashmob, that was purportedly held to mark International Human Rights Day.
