SHAH ALAM: Public participation on Facebook in Selangor has helped police to reduce crime in the state, said Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Ismail Omar.

He said the state police established its Facebook page in May this year, and to date, has over 2,000 followers, who have used the social media site as a medium of communication with the law enforcers.

He said based on the police's observation, the public has been using the Facebook page to alert the police in various crime occurrences.

In addition as a channel to receive the public's feedback and notifications, he said the police also use the page to publicise information concerning matters related to safety.

The IGP also said the Selangor index crime rate had reduced by 8.4% from January to September this year when compared to the corresponding period in 2010.

Ismail said the Selangor police was confident in achieving the 5% target of index crime reduction by the end of November.
