Universiti Malaya Law Faculty lecturer Datin Nor Aini Abdullah said a new law to punish serial criminals, therefore, was not needed. Nor Aini, whose area of expertise include criminal law, said "what is more important is to ensure that the current laws are effectively enforced. "The punishment under the Penal Code is more than enough for serial offenders. "The courts have the jurisdiction to impose harsher sentence on such offenders." She was commenting on the calls for the government to implement a habitual offender law, also known as the "three strikes law". The media, she said, should play their part to inform the public that Malaysia had ample laws to deal with habitual offenders.
