KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 8 — Two laws — the Restricted Residence Act 1933 and the Banishment Act 1959 — were abolished unanimously at the Dewan Negara today.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong said in his winding up speech that other laws can adequately fill the void left by them, Bernama Online reported.

Liew said the Banishment Act has been unused for 34 years, and the Immigration Act 1959/63 already covers issues of detention and deportation of foreign nationals.

He assured that the security, peace and harmony would be maintained without it.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced the abolition of the Restricted Residence Act 1933 and the Banishment Act 1959 on September 115.

He announced the three emergency proclamations and the Internal Security 1960 (ISA) will be repealed, as well as a review of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984 and Section 27 of the Police Act 1967.

Dewan Negara sits again next week.
