KUALA LUMPUR: The controversial provision in the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 should be repealed to allow students in higher learning institutions to take part in politics, said MCA Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong.

“MCA Youth has been consistently requesting for this. These students have the right to vote and be active in politics,” he said.

“So long as students are not unruly during their political activities and responsible freedom of expression is practised, MCA Youth fails to see why Section 15(5)(a) was even inserted in the first place,” Dr Wee said at the Parliament lobby yesterday.

Dr Wee stressed the court ruling was not a “green light” for students to start rampaging on the streets under the guise of freedom of expression and association.

MCA vice-president Gan Ping Sieu said the court decision should be seen as a signal that the Government needed to amend the Act quickly.

“This is in line with the spirit of political transformation announced by the Prime Minister.

“Students and academicians should no longer be put on a tight leash but be encouraged to explore, associate and voice their views in a responsible manner,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He added that should Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia pursue its case by appealing against the decision in the Federal Court, it would be contrary to the spirit of transformation taking place in the country.
