The Family Court’s decision yesterday made her heart sing with joy when her father Low Swee Siong was granted full guardianship rights. Clad in a colourful gown and a black jacket, Bi-Anne, 13, kept saying that she was “very happy; very, very happy” with the court’s decision. “I get to celebrate a happy Valentine’s Day dinner with my father,” said the Form One student outside the courtroom. Bi-Anne was accompanied by her father, family members and counsel Pushpa Ratnam and Ravi Nekoo; while the girl’s mother Tan Siew Siew, 38, who is a London-based restaurant manager, and Tan’s counsel were not present. High Court judge Justice Yeoh Wee Siam granted full guardianship, custody care and control of Bi-Anne to her real estate negotiator father after interviewing the girl in chambers for an hour from 8.15am. Justice Yeoh also allowed reasonable access to Tan but subject to the girl’s wishes. Pushpa said the access, among others, allowed Tan to celebrate Chinese New Year with Bi-Anne once every two years, and the girl could go to England. Tan could also contact her daughter by telephone, e-mail and Skype. If Bi-Anne wished, she could get family members to accompany her on the trip. On April 22 last year, the Court of Appeal granted Low full-time interim access to Bi-Anne and a stay order on a 2008 High Court ruling which granted custody of the girl to her mother, who is living in London. Low and Tan were married in 1999. The couple divorced in 2006, and custody of Bi-Anne was given to the father. Two years later, Tan applied for and won custody of Bi-Anne. Low was given reasonable access. However, Bi-Anne refused to go with her mother and insisted that she wanted to live with her father. Low filed six appeals in September 2010 over the decision of a Family Court in Kuala Lumpur. Set as favourite Share Email This Comments (0)
