KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court here has set Aug 30 for case management of a negligence suit filed by the sister of toddy shop assistant R. Gunasegaran, who allegedly died after being beaten up while in police custody.
Justice Yeoh Wee Siam set Aug 22 for the defendants’ counsel to file a statement of defence, and Aug 29 for plaintiff R. Ganga Gouri to file a reply.
Ganga is claiming that her brother had been beaten to death by a policeman after he was arrested in a drug raid on July 16, 2009.
In her statement of claim, Ganga said other police officers had failed to stop their colleague from assaulting Gunasegaran and neglected to give medical aid or properly report the death.
Ganga also claimed that her brother’s body had been stored improperly at the morgue of Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) and had been in a bad state of decay.
She is suing the Inspector-General of Police, nine police officers, the Government, and the officer-in-charge of the deceased at HKL for general, special, exemplary and aggravated damages, as well as interest, costs and other relief.
