KUALA LUMPUR: Two policemen were sentenced to four years' jail after they were found guilty of hurting two detainees, including scalding them with hot water, to extort a confession.

Sessions Court judge Abu Bakar Katar, however, allowed a stay of the sentence pending an appeal.

Sergeants Mohd Shafiee Abdul Halim and Mohd Diah Sulaiman, both from the Brickfields district police headquarters, were ordered to enter their defence three weeks ago.

Five other policemen, who were jointly charged with them, were acquitted.

The judge, in finding the duo guilty yesterday, said their defence was a bare denial and an afterthought, and that it was difficult for the court to believe them.

The victims were B. Prabakar and C. Solomon Raj, who were detained in December 2008 and were allegedly forced to confess to crimes they did not commit.

Two doctors had also testified that Prabakar and Solomon suffered burns on their chests and abdomens, the result of having been scalded with hot water.

The two victims had also filed a civil suit at the High Court against the seven police officers, Brickfields police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Abdul Bari Wan Abdul Khalid and the government for allegedly torturing them.

Judge Abu Bakar allowed the stay of execution but increased bail amount for each from RM5,000 to RM10,000 each.
