SHAH ALAM: The investigating officer in the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder case
admitted that he did not investigate the crime scene from several angles.
Asst Supt Tonny Lunggan, when cross-examined by Datuk Hazman Ahmad, said he did
not record the statement of the owner of the plot of land where the Mongolian
woman was murdered.
He also admitted that he did not know whether there was anyone working at the
nearby Subang dam on the night of Oct 19, 2006 when Altantuya was said to have
been killed and blown up.
“I did not investigate that,” he said when pressed by Hazman, counsel for first
accused C/Insp Azilah Hadri.
However, the investigating officer said he had ordered other officers to record
the statements of two auxiliary policemen – Abdul Raimy Abdul Razak and Mustafa
Umat – who were stationed at a beat base close to the crime scene that night.
ASP Lunggan insisted that there could not have been any workers at the dam when
the murder took place because it was night-time and the surrounding area was all
jungle.
He disagreed with a suggestion by Hazman that an explosion would easily have
been heard or felt by the people in the area because it was such a quiet place.
“It happened during the Deepavali and Hari Raya celebrations.
“My investigations found that many firecrackers had been set off that night,” he
said, adding that explosions from a bomb and that of firecrackers sounded quite
similar to him.
To further questioning by Hazman, ASP Lunggan confirmed that the two auxiliary
policemen were asked if they had heard any explosion that night but they were
not asked if they had seen anything out of the ordinary.
The investigating officer agreed with the lawyer that the statements of these
two auxiliary policemen – whose names are listed in the witness list but have
yet to testify – were important.
The trial continues on Thursday.
