IPOH: To ensure that mosques and surau are not turned into a platform for political activities, the Raja Muda of Perak Raja Dr Nazrin Shah has told territorial chiefs to become the "eyes and ears of the ruler" in monitoring religious activities in their areas.

As territorial chiefs (Orang-Orang Besar Jajahan), they should report inappropriate Islamic activities to him or Sultan Azlan Shah, he said at a meeting with them and district Islamic affairs administrators yesterday.

"By virtue of your position as the territorial chiefs, each of you represents Sultan Azlan Shah in the areas of your administration.

"Therefore, you must act as the eyes and ears of the ruler in monitoring Islamic activities."

"Mosques and surau should be used as an instrument of integration and unity among Muslims.

"Hence, any activities which could destroy Muslim unity must not be allowed to take place."

Raja Nazrin also urged state religious officers to remain non-partisan and free from the influence of political parties and their leaders.

He reminded them that the Federal Constitution annointed sultans as the official Islamic head at the state level.

"They have absolute power in Islamic affairs and are above politics, being non-aligned and free from partisan influences or interests."
