©The Star (Used by permission) by ONG HAN SEAN KUANTAN: The Green Solidarity gathering on Oct 9 is a call to action for the people to not leave decisions solely to politicians, said its organising committee chairperson Bang Seet Ping. She said many people do not have a say in the decision making process that would affect their future, health and livelihood. “We want the authorities to know that our voices need to be heard. “This event is to endorse the values and principles of the Earth Charter which is a declaration of fundamental ethical principles for building a just, sustainable and peaceful global society in the 21st century. “If these meaningful principles are adopted, we think the people’s voices will be heard. “The decision making process will not be solely limited to a small group of people in power,” said Bang at a press conference recently. She added that the Earth Charter would also stamp out abuse of power for personal interest and make big corporations accountable for their projects. Bang also said after the morning gathering at Taman Gelora where 10,000 people were expected to turn up, a luncheon would take place at Mexica Garden Seafood Restaurant. The lunch event will feature former Malaysian Bar Council president Datuk Ambiga Sreenivasan and Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) director Dr Kua Kia Soong as speakers. “They will speak on human rights and environmental justice,” she said. Bang said the response to the event had been overwhelming. Set as favourite Share Email This Comments (0)
