The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department said members of the Cabinet and their spouses were not duty-bound to declare their assets to the commission. “We should only declare it to the Prime Minister. “The MACC's task is to only investigate if there is any irregularity ... that's all,” he said after addressing the Legal Affairs Division's monthly gathering here. The MACC had said on Wednesday that it wanted a copy of the declaration of assets of Cabinet members, their spouses and other family members which were submitted to the Prime Minister. MACC advisory panel chairman Puan Sri Zaitun Zawiyah Puteh had said the commission had forwarded the proposal to Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at a meeting on Dec 12 and he seemed receptive to the idea. “We proposed that a copy of the declaration of assets of all members of the federal administration be given to the commission. “We (further) proposed that their spouses and other family members be required to disclose their assets through a statutory declaration and a record of it be kept by the MACC,” she added. Mohamed Nazri would not comment whether the MACC was jumping the gun on the matter as the Prime Minister had not made any decision yet. “That has to be discussed by the Cabinet. “The MACC is catering to public sentiment. “Their involvement is only when they discover irregularity in the normal daily business,” he said. Mohamed Nazri said he did not think the proposal would benefit Cabinet members and politicians though it was perceived as a method to enhance the integrity of the federal administration and elected representatives. “As politicians, we know our integrity is very important and when we go for election, we certainly must take care of our reputation. “Whether the move will do good to the politicians ... I don't think so because we don't want to be involved in corruption. “Why must you see it as if every politician wants to be involved in corruption?” he said.
