KUALA TERENGGANU: Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said there is no need to stop the National Civics Bureau (BTN) courses as demanded by the Opposition.

He noted that BTN modules were designed to infuse patriotism and to mould a progressive nation.

“I am perplexed as to why the BTN issue is only being raised now when the courses have existed for some time now. Probably, the opposition leaders have ran out of issues or are attempting to conceal their internal crisis by diverting attention,’’ he said.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said the content of the BTN course instilled patriotic spirit.

On Wednesday, the Selangor state executive councillor for Education, Higher Education and Human Capital Development Committee Dr Halimah Ali said that Selangor state staff and students of its state-owned institutions were barred from attending BTN courses with immediate effect.

The step was taken as it was perceived that the course was an indoctrination process by the Barisan Nasional to allegedly divide races, cause religious tension and provoke hatred of the Opposition.

“The BTN course does not contain any racial content and the Selangor government was just making a big issue,’’ Shahrizat told reporters at the Wanita Umno Kepong Division’s Hari Raya Aidiladha function here yesterday.

In Bahau, Negri Sembilan, Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Noh Omar said the Opposition is using the issue to deflect its weaknesses.

Commenting on DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang’s call for BTN to be stopped, Noh said at an Aidiladha function: “Just like a blind man who does not know of what he does not see, how can Kit Siang talk of the BTN course when he has never attended it?”

In Klang, Selangor state exco member and Sri Andalas assemblyman Dr A. Xavier Jayakumar maintained that the BTN course should be scrapped and accused Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir of wanting to make public the syllabus to dispel suspicions as a show.

“If Barisan is sincere it should reveal the course outline and should be brave enough to revamp the BTN course on a public oriented outline without politics involved.

“It should not turn the issue into a show.

“The A to Z of the course outline must be made public,” he said.
