BN attains simple majority |

PUTRAJAYA, March 9 (Bernama) -- The Election Commission (EC) has announced that
as of 1.30am today, the Barisan Nasional (BN) had attained a simple majority
after winning 127 of the 222 Parliamentary seats at stake in the country's 12th
general election held yesterday.
EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman said the total included the eight
seats the coalition won uncontested.
"I therefore declare the Barisan Nasional has won the Parliamentary election
held on March 8, 2008," he told a press conference here.
He said the voting process had gone smoothly in all 222 constituencies.
He said that according to Provision 25 (f) of the Rules of Conduct of Elections,
the political party which achieved more than 50 per cent of the total number of
seats provided can be declared the winner of the election by the EC.
Meanwhile, EC deputy chairman Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar declared PAS as the
winner of the state election in Kelantan.
He said PAS had won 23 of the 44 seats at stake in the state as of 2.10am today.
