KUANTAN: Syariah judges and lawyers should be more vocal in defending the rights of Muslims and answering criticism against Islam and the syariah, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said yesterday.

He said religious officers should also join the syariah practitioners to stop the exploitation of Islam by certain quarters.

"They have questioned several issues, including apostasy and the right to embrace other religions. If the Bar Council can be vocal about these issues, why can't syariah lawyers do the same?" he said after launching the Syariah Department's meet-the-people programme here yesterday.

Present were Chief Syariah Judge Datuk Ibrahim Lembut and head of state syariah, judge Datuk Abdul Hamid Abdul Rahman.

Adnan said it was timely for the syariah practitioners and religious officers to be united as some people had crossed the line.
"They have misused Allah's name and the qiblat (direction to Kaabah in Mecca) and this may confuse our future generations."

However, he said discussions on such issues should be made with rational minds.
