KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 12, 2011): The Health Ministry's "intervention" in the administration of the Orang Asli hospital in Gombak is timely to address deteriorating standards of medical care and facilities at the institution, said Bar Council president Lim Chee Wee.

"It is hoped that under the new hospital management, the current and pressing health issues faced by the Orang Asli will be speedily addressed," he said of the takeover from the Orang Asli Development Department.

"The Malaysian Bar also hopes that the hospital will be a place of employment and a training ground for the Orang Asli, so that it can one day be completely staffed and managed by their own people," he said in a statement.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai had recently announced that the hospital, together with all other health care facilities for the community, will be placed under the ministry's portfolio from January next year.

TheSun had last week published a special report that chronicled the chain of events which led up to Liow's announcement which has also been met with positive response from various stakeholders.

Lim noted that numerous complaints which included serious allegations of negligence, mismanagement and failure to comply with medical guidelines on treating childhood malnutrition had been brought to the bar's attention.

"Representations were made to the Health director-general to intervene in the matter and deal with the plight of the Orang Asli," he added.

A former doctor at the hospital, Dr Selvaa Vathany Kanapathi Pillai, made headlines early last year after she went public with the damning allegations, allegedly at the hands of the then hospital director Dr Saaiah Abdullah.
