KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail was accused of trying to hide facts from his superiors in the investigations into the "black eye" incident.

This allegation was contained in the statement of claim filed by the then investigating officer of the case, Datuk Mat Zain Ibrahim.

The statement of claim, which was tendered as an exhibit in the sodomy case, was read out by Anwar's counsel Sulaiman Abdullah on Wednesday.

The statement alleged that Gani, who was then a senior deputy public prosecutor, hid facts of the investigations from the then Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohtar Abdullah.

Mat Zain alleged that Gani had tried to slow down investigations, even as he was trying to complete it as soon as possible.

Mat Zain claimed that Gani was present on the 30th floor of the Federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman on Sept 20, 1998, the day Anwar was beaten by the then Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Noor.

Mat Zain, who was then the Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigations Department chief, was tasked with finding out who had given Anwar the black eye.

He alleged that he had submitted his investigation papers to Gani on Oct 30 the same year. But a week later, the A-G had issued a press statement claiming that neither he, nor any of his officers, had received the investigation papers (IP).

The chambers only confirmed they received the IP on Nov 20, 1998, after Mat Zain insisted that Gani confirm this.

On Jan 6, 1999, the chambers said that Mat Zain's investigations were incomplete and that they could not identify who had assaulted Anwar.

Rahim, however, was subsequently charged on April 23, 1999 with assaulting Anwar. The former IGP pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two months' jail and fined RM2,000.

Mat Zain, in his statement of claim, said he believed that Gani had hidden several of the facts of the investigations from the A-G.
