BUKIT MERTAJAM (Aug 21, 2008) : Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim still refuses to swear in the Islamic manner concerning the allegation that he had sodomised his former aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, 23, despite calls for him to do so by various quarters.

Anwar, who was challenged by Mohd Saiful Bukhari to swear by the al-Quran as he did on Aug 15, said he had been advised by several ulama against it but would continue to demand for the 'qazaf' at the syariah court.

In the latest call, the Selangor PAS Youth movement challenged Anwar to swear by the al-Quran if he was innocent and was telling the truth.

The movement's head, Sallehen Mukhyi, said it would be the best move by Anwar to resolve his personal problem and clear his name.

Yesterday, Umno vice-head Khairy Jamaluddin had also challenged Anwar to swear to prove that he was not guilty of the charge.

Khairy, who is also Rembau MP, said that swearing by the al-Quran was not something that could be politicised.

However, in his ceramah in the Permatang Pauh parliamentary constituency, Anwar had dismissed the challenge by his former aide claiming that the swearing by Mohd Saiful Bukhari on the eve of the Permatang Pauh parliamentary by-election was politically motivated.

In an attempt to make a political comeback, Anwar is contesting in the by-election for the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat vacated by his wife, Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Ismail although she had been recently returned in the general election on March 8.

In all his ceramah, Anwar claimed that the allegation by Mohd Saiful Bukhari against him was a political conspiracy and he had frequently claimed that he had been advised by noted ulama especially from the Arab countries not to swear by the al-Quran and instead demand for qazaf' in the syariah court.

"I don't want to swear because an Arab ulama, Yusof Qardhawi, who is my good friend had telephoned me.

"He said, Anwar, I support you. Don't worry, I pray for you. Do not swear, don't give your DNA sample, you just follow the syariah court," he said in his ceramah at Kampung Pertama, Permatang Janggus last night.

Anwar had referred Mohd Saiful Bukhari's allegation to the Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory Syariah Court in July. -- BERNAMA

Who is Politicising the act of Swearing on the Quran

Khairy said that swearing by the al-Quran was not something that could be politicised. But we see the video of Saiful's swearing on big screen TV all over Permatang Pauh organised by the BN ala Umno! We are fast becoming an international joke over this issue.

Putarbelit by the mainstream media

This is media spinning at its most blatant.

Utusan first carried the report for it's 21 August 2008 edition, with the headlines 'Pemuda PAS Selangor cabar Anwar bersumpah'.

This report published by the Sun is actually reported by news agency Bernama who took the story from Utusan Malaysia.

The PAS Youth Leader, Mr.Sallehen Mukhyi, has never 'challenged' Mr. Anwar to swear the oath. There is a report in Sinar Harian (a Malay language daily) on what Mr. Sallehen actually said and in no way did he challenge Mr. Anwar to swear the oath. In fact, what he said was that it was up to Mr. Anwar to swear or not, it is his right and people shouldn't pressure him to do so.

Will our media ever learn?
