KUCHING: All Malaysian states will have their own anti-human trafficking task force next year.
These task forces,  with  Malacca as the first,   will be lead by the respective state's police chiefs with  various  agencies and non-governmental organisations participating.

Home Affairs Ministry's Under Secretary of the Council for Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling Migrants Syuhaida Abdul Wahab Zen said this, at the launch of the  state-level Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Sarawak Zone National Council of Women Organisation, at Wisma Bapa Malaysia, yesterday.

"Though we have moved up a notch from a Tier 3 to Tier 2  of the US State Department watch list, we believe our current efforts will push us up further to a better status," said Syuhaida.

Sarawak Welfare, Women and Family Development Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah said 83 victims had been  rescued  since Malaysia's  anti-human trafficking act was established.

Bukit Aman Anti Trafficking in Persons Unit chief Assistant Superintendent Mohd Hadzwan Zulkefle said sex trafficking existed in poor and wealthy countries with the Southeast Asian region being the worst.

"Japan is the largest market, while Hong Kong, Malaysia, Taiwan and Thailand are both destination and transit countries.  There are also cases where Filipino men have been  kidnapped and forced to work in oil palm plantations in Sabah," said Hadzwan.
