PUTRAJAYA: The 13 people detained in Tawau early this week have been revealed to be terrorists, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

He added that although investigations on their activities were still ongoing, the authorities had to take prompt action.

“This is not about politics because they are real terrorists,” he said after chairing the ministry's post-Cabinet meeting here yesterday.

Hishammuddin also said the suspects including six foreigners were being held under the Internal Security Act as the new law to replace it would only come into effect in March.

“If investigations are completed before the new law comes into effect, they will be charged under the ISA,” he said.

He added that the suspects were being held at a detention centre in Tawau.

It was reported that Sabah PAS chairman Mohd Aminuddin Aling had asked the police to clarify the actual situation on the arrests so that it would not be wrongly interpreted.

The suspects were arrested between Monday night and Tuesday by a team from the Federal Police Special Task Force (Operations and Counter Terrorism).

Sources said they were not only planning to revive the outlawed Darul Islam, but had also intended to conduct paramilitary training in the coastal town of Sabah before going to the southern Philippines.

Meanwhile, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar said he would not compromise on militant activities in the country.

“Immediate action had to be taken,” he said after chairing a meeting on security with representatives from 79 foreign embassies at the Cheras Police College in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

He urged all parties including human rights groups not to dispute the police action as it involved national security.

Ismail declined to reveal the nationalities of the six foreigners.
