KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 10, 2011): Former Bar Council President Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan, MCA and Transparency International will be among those attending the Parliamentary Select Committee’s (PSC) on Electoral Reforms’ first public hearing tomorrow.

The PSC chairman Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili (pix) said thus far, 11 individuals and organisations have confirmed their attendance for the public hearing, which will be held in Parliament tomorrow and Saturday.

“Others include the Selangor Youth Council (Majlis Belia Selangor), Ex-Policemen Association (Persatuan Bekas Polis) and Selangor Community Association (Persatuan Komuniti Selangor.)

“Other individuals are also welcomed but they must bring their memorandum. They are given 10 to 20 minutes to voice out their views and must submit the relevant documents,” said Ongkili in a press conference after the PSC’s meeting today.

The five-hour meeting was with the Election Commission (EC) and the National Registration Department (NRD).

“We are done with our meetings with the EC and the NRD for the time being but we can call them again if the need arises,” said Ongkili.

He said next week, the committee will meet with the Attorney- General’s Chambers to get their views in terms of the legal and constitutional aspects.

Ongkili also said the committee, in their fourth meeting today decided to form five sub-committees within the PSC.

The committees are:

> Committee on electoral laws and procedures- headed by Datuk Seri Mohd Radzi Sheikh Ahmad (BN-Kangar) and Wee Choo Keong (Independent-Wangsa Maju)

> Committee on improving election process- headed by Azmin Ali (PKR-Gombak) and P. Kamalanathan (BN-Hulu Selangor)

> Committee on Electoral Roll- headed by Ongkili and Anthony Loke (DAP-Rasah)

> Committee on strengthening EC- headed by Tan Sri Dr Fong Chan Onn (BN-Alor Gajah) and Dr Hatta Ramli (PAS-Kuala Krai)

> Committee on Studying alternative electoral systems- Headed by Wee and Alexandar Nata Linggi (BN-Kapit)

The PSC - comprising nine MPs: five from Barisan Nasional; three from the opposition, one independent - will deliberate for the next six months to look into ways to improve the electoral system.
