The LawCare Fund is for the benefit of all Members of the Bar and their families. LawCare's objective is to look into the welfare of practising lawyers afflicted by serious illness subject to certain criteria being satisfied. In addition, LawCare provides financial assistance of RM30,000 to a Member’s nominees/trustees in the event of the Member’s death while in active practice.
Existing Members are insured for RM20,000 up to 69 years of age, and another RM10,000 is taken from the LawCare Fund to top up to RM30,000, the total sum which is disbursed to the Members’ nominees/trustees or beneficiaries. For Members who are 70 years of age and above, the sum of RM30,000 is paid out from the LawCare Fund.
From January to September 2010, there were nine claims in total, of which two is for death of Members 70 years of age and above. The total sum paid out for the death claims is RM270,000, of which RM130,000 is taken from the LawCare Fund.
Bar Council has renewed the group term life insurance policy with Alliance Insurance Assurance for the term 2010/2011.
