The objectives of the Law Reform and Special Areas Committee are to:

(1)    examine the provisions of statutes, regulations and legislations affecting the everyday life of ordinary Malaysians;
(2)    suggest amendments to these laws and address problems faced by the public pertaining to these laws; and
(3)    liaise with, and assist, other Bar Council committees in relation to law reform affecting the Committees’ areas of work.

(A)    Subcommittee on Civil Law Act 1956

The Subcommittee undertook the review of the Bar Council’s “Memorandum Relating to Proposed Amendments to the Civil Law Act” (“Memorandum”), which had been prepared in March 2000.  The Memorandum is being finalised and will be forwarded to the relevant authorities upon completion.

(B)    Roundtable on Recommendations to Amend Persons with Disabilities Act 2008

The objective of this event, held on 23 Sept 2010, was to collate recommendations to amend the Persons with Disabilities Act 2008.  30 people attended, including representatives from the Ministry of Human Resources, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Women, Family & Community Development, various organisations for persons with special needs, university and academia, and Members of the Bar.

(C)    Proposed Amendments to Limitation Act 1953

Bar Council forwarded its views to the Attorney General’s Chambers in May 2010 on the proposed amendments to the Limitation Act 1953 in relation to latent injuries and damages.
