The Islamic Finance Committee (IFC)’s objective is to provide training for Members of the Bar in the area of Islamic Finance. The Committee sources for funding from the government and other sectors to provide the best trainings for Members at affordable costs.
For the 2009/2010 term, the Committee successfully co-organised a series of National Symposia on Islamic Banking and Finance with the Association of Islamic Banking Institute Malaysia (AIBIM). The series kicked off on 12 Jan 2009 in Penang, followed by the symposia on 13 Apr and 20 Apr 2009 in Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru respectively. The fourth symposium was held in Sabah in collaboration with the Sabah Law Association (SLA). The last symposium for 2009 was held in Kuala
Terengganu on 21 Oct 2009.
Apart from the National Symposia, IFC's projects for this term include a “Workshop on Legal Documentation” which is scheduled for the last quarter of 2009. The details are being finalised and Members will be notified soon on the date and venue by way of circular.
IFC is planning to conduct courtesy visits to the International Sha’riah Research Academy for Islamic Finance, AIBIM, Islamic Banking and Finance Institute Malaysia, International Islamic University Malaysia, Securities Commission, and Bank Negara Malaysia. This is in line with the Committee’s plan to have an Islamic Banking resource centre for Members, located at the Bar Council Library.
Following the Committee’s courtesy visit to Y.A. Dato’ Rohana Yusuf at the Kuala Lumpur High Court 4 on 23 Oct 2009, a set of Practice Directions on Islamic Banking is currently being drafted by the Committee.
