Thursday, 11 November 2010 09:17am
The objective of the Islamic Finance Committee (“IFC”) is to provide training for Members of the Bar in the area of Islamic finance.  IFC seeks funding from the government and other sources to provide the best trainings at an affordable cost.

IFC was involved in the following activities for the 2010/2011 term:

(1)    The ‘Workshop on Legal Documentation for Islamic Financing’ was held twice, in Malacca and Kedah from 2 to 4 Apr and 23 to 25 Apr 2010, respectively.  A total of 89 lawyers attended both workshops.

(2)    In collaboration with Association of Islamic Banking Institutions Malaysia (“AIBIM”) and Advocates’ Association of Sarawak (“AAS”), the final segment of the ‘National Symposium on Islamic Banking and Finance’ series was held on 21 to 22 May 2010.  It was hosted by the Kuching branch of AAS, and held in Sarawak.

(3)    IFC visited Securities Commission Malaysia (“SC”) on 18 June 2010.  The purposes of the visit were to: gain an overview of the development of the Malaysian Islamic capital market; build a good working relationship with SC; and build a reservoir of materials for the Islamic banking resource centre, which will be set up at the Bar Council library, for the convenience of Members.

(4)    A meeting with bankers and representatives from AIBIM to discuss and draft standard claim criteria for three summonses - the Murabahah, Ijarah and Bai Bithaman Ajil - was held on 18 June 2010.  These criteria will guide Members on the basic requirements when preparing documents on Islamic finance.

(5)    IFC organised a talk on ‘Islamic Banking and Financing: Tawarruq & Bursa Suq Al-Sila’’ on 7 Oct 2010, which was attended by 40 participants.  The speaker, Norfadelizan Abdul Rahman, is the Vice-President of the Islamic Markets Division of Bursa Malaysia Berhad.  He currently leads the development and marketing of Bursa Suq Al-Sila’.
