The objectives of the Committee are to: a. monitor developments of the Intellectual Property (IP) industry; b. educate and update IP practitioners on these developments; c. promote IP awareness to the public; and d. liaise with other IP organisations.
The Committee had its first meeting in June for the 2009/2010 term. During the meeting, the Committee outlined several projects to be undertaken for this term, which include organising seminars on IP issues in the states of Penang and Pahang. The Committee also hopes to co-organise such workshops or seminars with the Licensing Executives Society Malaysia (LES), the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI) and the ASEAN Intellectual Property Association (ASEAN IPA).
Apart from that, the Committee is also embarking on a long-term IP education programme to create IP awareness and educate the younger generation on copyright and piracy issues. One of the items on the agenda includes visiting secondary schools and holding seminars for school children.
Members of the Bar are most welcome to express their positions and suggestions to enhance any IP laws and procedures affecting their practices. The Committee will highlight these issues with the relevant policy makers and stakeholders, and where necessary, propose amendments to incorporate such suggestions into current IP laws and procedures.
