The idea for the coffee talk was initiated by the Chairperson of the Bar Council Intellectual Property Committee (IPC), Wong Jin Nee. What was intended to be an informal discussion-cum-coffee talk turned into a full-fledged seminar due to overwhelming response from Members of the Bar, pupils in chambers and industry players - a total of 90 participants.
The moderator, Brian Law, who is also the Deputy Chairperson of IPC, introduced the young speaker, Foong Cheng Leong. The speaker is currently attached to Messrs Lee Hishammuddin Allen & Gledhill and is a registered trademarks, patents and industrial designs agent.
The speaker explained that the Personal Data Protection Act 2010, which was passed by the Parliament in April 2010, aims, among others, to regulate the processing and usage of personal data in commercial transactions by data users for the purpose of protecting individuals’ personal data and safeguarding their interests. A data user is not permitted to process an individual’s personal data unless with his or her consent and when it is necessary.
The seminar lasted for one hour, followed by a 15-minute Q&A-cum-experience-sharing session. Feedback from the participants was very encouraging. The participants were enthusiastic about having another session after the Act comes into force and requested a similar talk on the Competition Act 2010.
It is part of IPC’s agenda this year to hold more such talks, with the objective of discussing the latest developments in intellectual property (IP) and IP-related legislation with Members of the Bar and members of the public.
