Contributed by Sumitha Shaanthinni, Executive Officer, Industrial Law Committee

The Bar Council Industrial Law Committee (ILC) held its Annual Dinner on 24 June 2010 at the Royale Chulan, Kuala Lumpur.

The dinner was well attended with about 100 guests, which included the Chairmen of the Industrial Courts.

In his welcome address, Anand Ponnudurai, Chairperson of ILC, stated that the dinner was held to commemorate the Committee’s achievements for the past two years, with the hope that the coming year would bring ILC to greater heights.

According to Anand, the Employment Law Conference, held in January 2010, had been a great success and he owed it to the support of the Industrial Courts, the Members of the Bar and in particular, the Committee members.  Anand stated that the dinner was also an avenue for Members of the Bar to meet the Chairmen of the Industrial Courts from different states.

One of the Committee’s major projects for this term is to work with the relevant stakeholders on the amendments to the labour laws proposed by the government recently.  In addition, the Committee will continue with its primary objective of holding seminars in different states to educate practitioners on the practice and procedures of the Industrial Courts.

Further the Committee will continue to engage in consultation and dialogues with the Industrial Courts for the benefit of clients, industrial relations practitioners and the Industrial Courts.  Following that, Anand thanked YA Puan Susila Sithamparam, President of the Industrial Court of Malaysia, and former Presidents for inviting ILC to raise issues of concern at their Consultative Committee meetings.

While expressing his gratitude to YA Puan Susila Sithamparam and the Chairmen of the Industrial Courts for their continued assistance to the Bar Council and ILC, Anand also imparted his appreciation to the Bar Council Office Bearers and members for their support.  He ended his speech by thanking the Organising Committee of the Annual Dinner and ILC members for their contribution.

In her special address, YA Puan Susila Sithamparam thanked ILC for inviting her to grace the occasion.  She informed the Members present that the Courts will introduce an audiovisual system to record proceedings.  She also urged Members to make use of the representatives’ room (bilik wakil) located on the ground floor of the Kuala Lumpur Industrial Court.  The room is open during the weekdays from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm.

Thereafter, the guests were treated to a sumptuous international buffet as the band belted out songs from various decades.  YA Dato’ Mary Shakila’s rendition of Karen Carpenter’s “Top of the World” and her duet with YA Tuan Fredrick Indran XA Nicholas were undeniably the entertainment highlights of the evening.  The dinner ended at midnight leaving the attendees with fond memories of a delightful event.
