LAWYER and pioneer playwright Lim Chor Pee, 70, died of lung cancer on Tuesday.

Among the high profile cases the well-known litigator handled was the Jumabhoy family feud over family assets in the 1990s.

The Jumabhoy family had founded Scotts Holdings and Mr Lim represented Mr Rajabali Jumabhoy.

Mr Lim was diagnosed with the disease earlier this year and had been in and out of hospital since then.

Penang-born Mr Lim leaves behind his wife, mother, three children and three grandchildren.

He read law at St John's College Cambridge.

Lawyer and close friend Ooi Boon Leong, 69, said: 'He was a caring person who would always help if you needed any advice.'

Mr Ooi, who knew him during their university days in the 1950s said Mr Lim was passionate about the theatre. Mr Lim was among the pioneering batch of playwrights in the 1960s when English language theatre was just growing.

Mimi Fan and A White Rose At Midnight were two of his well-known works.

He was called to the bar in September 1962 and had also been a state counsel.

Former judge and colleague Tan Liang Ker, who is in his 70s, said Mr Lim was hardworking and had a very good knowledge of the law.

'He was thorough. When there are problems he will take the trouble to do research,' said Mr Tan.

Mr Lim was a founder of law firm Chor Pee & Hin Hiong, in 1964. That firm was later dissolved. A new firm, Chor Pee and Company was formed, which later became Chor Pee & Partners.

The firm was among the first few to branch out into the region, going to Vietnam.

With his passing, the firm Chor Pee & Partners has been dissolved.

Mr Lim was recently in the news when a judge ordered the Law Society to write to the Chief Justice to ask to set up a disciplinary committee to look into a complaint that Mr Lim had overcharged a client.

With Mr Lim's death, the disciplinary proceedings against him will not be acted on.

His son, Mr Mark Lim, 42, who is a consultant lawyer, said: 'He was a fighter and all his clients would appreciate that. He was not an aggressive type but a fighter in a very intelligent and measured way.'
