The coalition of organisations known as 50:44 issued the “Civil Society Joint Statement on Restoring Democracy” at the opening of its 11-day Merdeka celebration programme at the Central Market Annexe here. The statement listed six areas in the progress towards a strong and resilient democratic system. They are: upholding constitutional rights by rescinding authoritarian legislation; restoring the independence of the judiciary; ensuring free and fair elections; advancing media freedom and independence; fostering civil society participation and a culture of transparency and accountability; and protecting and celebrating the nation’s diversity.
About 30 civil society organisations are collaborating to hold a series of events from yesterday to Sept 16 under the theme “Remembering the People that Built This Nation”. “We must remember that the citizens play an important role in deciding what is right for society,” a representative from the Coalition For Clean and Fair Elections, Dr Dzukifl i Ahmad, said during a discussion session. The programme will feature discussions and seminars based on topics such as citizenship and democracy; gender and sexuality; migration, refugees and labour; Article 10; environment; child, youth and disability; race and religion; indigenous people; Federation Day; and development and Malaysia Day. There will also be a Freedom Film Fest on the last three days. Set as favourite Share Email This Comments (0)
