A wise man once said, “Charity is injurious unless it helps the recipient to become independent of it.”

Gurpuri Foundation, a home for orphaned, abandoned, abused and underprivileged children, places great emphasis on the children’s education.

As long as a child expresses his or her interest and displays the ability to further his or her studies, the home makes a conscious effort to educate and prepare the child for higher education. Currently, some of the children are pursuing courses in psychology and accountancy at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman.

For children who do not intend to further their education, they are offered training in vocational skills.  This ensures that these children will have alternative skills to allow them to gain independence when they enter society as adults.

Gurpuri Foundation was set up eight years ago and relies on public funding for its day‐to‐day operations.  The building that houses the children was donated by a generous philanthropist.

According to Sukhdev Singh, these children are being placed under their care to ensure that they are provided with the basic necessities of life and a nurturing environment.

As the children grow, there is also an increasing need for larger space to afford more comfortable living conditions and privacy to them.  At the moment, all boys and girls are sharing one dormitory each.

Although Gurpuri Foundation started out as a home for Sikh children, it welcomes children from all races and faiths. Currently there are 55 children in the home.

To commemorate the International Human Rights Day this year, BCHRC is hosting a fundraising dinner for seven selected children’s homes, which includes Gurpuri Foundation, in recognition of the children’s fundamental rights to food, shelter, healthcare, security, education and eventually gainful employment once they become adults.

We, at BCHRC, believe that although faced with such adversity, these children have every possibility and ability to become the leaders of our country, if given the hope and opportunity to do so. It is our duty to ensure that they are given equal opportunity to brave these challenges and eventually play a productive role in our society.

The Children’s Homes Fundraising Dinner, carrying the theme “Our Children. Our Hope. Our Future”, will be held at Sunway Hotel Resort and Spa on 10 December 2009.  Dinner tickets are priced at RM200 per ticket/RM2,000 per table.

We also welcome individual donations, in cash or in kind, and corporate sponsorship.

*10 December is declared as International Human Rights Day by the United Nations to mark the birth of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948. In keeping with its tradition and spirit, this year, BCHRC is hosting the fundraising dinner for seven children’s homes. Watch this space for more stories on the children, the homes and dinner program.
