KUALA LUMPUR: Public awareness of human rights is still lacking here despite the country’s rapid development.

Bar Council chairman Yeo Yang Poh said there were many aspects of human rights that Malaysians need to look into such as gender equality and rights for children.

”If you compare with certain countries, of course we are better (in fighting for human rights) but if you look at developed countries, we are far behind.

“We have to fight for various rights such as freedom of expression, freedom of belief, freedom of assembly and the right to clean air,” he told reporters after celebrating the Festival of Rights here yesterday.

Yeo said people should fight for their rights.

“Gather in large numbers and show that we are pro-rights. Otherwise, we will have less freedom in future,” he said.

ATOMISATION AND THE POLICE STATE EXPLAINED
written by Stephen Tan Ban Cheng, Tuesday, December 12 2006 06:17 pm

In a police state or countries veering toward a police state, the people are atomised. This means that they are split into individuals and/or families, therefore caring only for their individual or family interests to the detriment of other individuals or families.

If we care only for our individual or family interests, then it is easier for a police state or a intending police state to manipulate us.

Even police officers are never immune in such a situation as there will come a time when they will leave the force. Then, they and their families also become fodder for the police state and its machinations.

Given the above, the call to gather in large numbers assumes force. And every member of the police force must understand why they must remain professional in handling pro-human rights assemblies.
