The Court of Appeal has made a decision in favour of BN Friday (22 May). Also, UMNO leaders’ recent words and deeds reflected that UMNO has had a clear strategy and direction to deal with the political chaos in Perak, that is, to continue contends with Pakatan Rakyat.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has made it clear that he will leave it to the court to make decision. From BN’s decision of not participating in the Penanti by-election, it seems like UMNO has determined not to compromise with Pakatan Rakyat and not to dissolve the Perak State Assembly.
UMNO wishes to race against time and uses the three years time before the next general elections to restore the public’s support and trust, hoping to change the people’s current tendency of supporting and sympathising for Pakatan Rakyat.

UMNO’s strategy of change included retraining 60,000 UMNO publicists and sending them to countryside to explain to the people the truth behind BN’s regime seizure in Perak. Najib pointed out that the poor public relations of BN is the main reason that allows Pakatan Rakyat to attack the ruling coalition with the Perak regime issue. At the same time, UMNO has as well given Wanita Youth two years time to change the public’s support towards Pakatan Rakyat. UMNO Youth Chairman Khairy Jamaluddin has also been given responsibility to fight for young people’s support.

The Deputy Prime Minister also disclosed that the BN government will soon announce more good news. There are indications showing that BN wishes to implement Populism in order to fight for the people’s support. If BN could successfully revitalise the economy, it could have greater confidence to retrieve votes. The recent vitality in the stock market is conveying the message.

Najib will be visiting China soon, hoping that this could change the mindset of some older Chinese.

In terms of strategy, the BN government has shown no sign of softening, including the arrest of those who took part in the candlelight vigil, the police raid on DAP headquarters and even the arrest of five lawyers from the Kuala Lumpur Legal Aid Centre. BN is not afraid of public opinion as it is confident that the public’s memory will not last for long.

Therefore, the confrontation between BN and Pakatan Rakyat will continue. Other than launching counter-attacks in publicity, BN will try its best to convince the people with its performance. BN is still having the ability to rule and Pakatan Rakyat will continue its strategy to approach the masses in order to win sympathy and support, including carrying out sensational hunger strike campaign.

Whether the new policy has been taken effect after Najib took the office, we could tell from the Kelantan Menek Urai by-election, as the constituency has 99% of Malay and Muslim voters. It is a touchstone of strength detection for BN.

The future political situation included not only the Federal Court’s decision and the new planning that will soon be announced by BN, but as well Anwar’s sodomy case which will be trial in the High Court from 1-24 July.

If the political situation once again turns into a chaos, it could affect foreign investment and lead to economic downturn. Hopefully, this prediction will not come true.
