KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- Pas said today the party is opposing "in the strongest terms" the plan by the Bar Council to organise a forum on "Conversion to Islam" scheduled to take place on Saturday.

PAS President Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said if the Bar Council proceed with the forum, it could give rise to suspicion and tension in the relations between Muslims and members of other faiths, as well as undermining the country's harmony, which would not be beneficial to anyone.

"Any discussions on the matter should involve those with the knowledge and authority because Islam stands on its own strength," Abdul Hadi said in an article posted on the party's website.

Abdul Hadi said the Bar Council, therefore, should call off the forum for the sake of stability and to safeguard the relations between members of different faiths and races in the country.

Meanwhile, PAS Youth Chief Salahuddin Ayub said the forum should not be held openly.

Salahuddin, who is Kubang Kerian Member of Parliament, said the forum would create suspicion among Muslims in the country.

"One cannot understand issues as sensitive as this in a mere one-hour forum. This requires a long and in-depth discussion and held in series.

"We are worried that the forum will result in unhealthy reaction and create tension. This can stoke anger among the people, especially Muslims," he told Bernama.

He said if the Bar Council was adamant about going ahead with the forum, it should be held behind closed doors.

"This is a very sensitive issue among Muslims and I don't agree that it be held publicly.

"In this respect, they (the Bar Council) should invite muftis, religious experts or someone from the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) to get the correct views and not cause confusion among Muslims," he said.
