KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 10 (Bernama) -- Disputes arising from divorce when one party embraces Islam can be resolved through negotiations, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Sunday.

He said this could be done behind closed-doors between both parties in the presence of their lawyers, either civil or syariah.

"These things would not be made public because it could invite various interpretations and negative implications," he told reporters after attending a function at Darul Kifayah Complex in Taman Koperasi Polis here.

He said the issues such as the division of properties jointly acquired during marriage and custody over children, if resolved during the talks could avoid conflicts on the jurisdiction of civil and syariah courts.

There would be no need for Bar Council to intervene by holding forums such as the one held Saturday on "Conversion to Islam", he said.

"In any system there are weaknesses but it is not impossible for us to improve it. An intervention by people who do not have the right to intervene in our affairs is not the way.

"They can give opinions but they should do it intelligently, not by being rude like what they had done," he said.

Zahid said the authorities should take action for the defiance shown by Bar Council by proceeding with the forum. It seemed that the council wanted to bring into question Islamic laws and institutions, he said.

"There was a hidden agenda to disparage Islam. I think, it was not trying to resolve issues but to attack others," he said.

In KOTA KINABALU, Muslim Lawyers Association of Malaysia president Tan Sri Abu Zahar Nika Ujang also said Bar Council had a hidden agenda when it continued to hold the forum.

He said that it was clear to him that the council had taken advantage of the country's political situation and turned into a tool by "outsiders" to cause trouble.
