PETALING JAYA: The Bar Council is prepared to help Jeff Lee Kwong Yeong, 19, detained in Kajang Prison for six months for not carrying his MyKad.

Jeff’s mother was unable to get him out as she could not post the court bail of RM1,000.

He faces a fine of between RM3,000 and RM20,000 but his case has been postponed several times since he was first charged on Feb 5.

To complicate matters, the MyKad number Jeff gave was found to belong to someone else and his fingerprints are being verified to ascertain his identity ahead of his next court hearing on Aug 24.

The Bar Council’s Criminal Law Committee chairman Datuk V. Sithambaram said that they would send a lawyer to represent Jeff.

“This is to ensure that the boy is not detained any further. It is totally unfair.

“I think the court has given the police enough time to verify his identity,” he said.
