KUALA LUMPUR: The Bar Council has expressed concern over the manner the Hindraf protest was handled.

Its president Ambiga Sreenevasan said there were reports of an unnecessarily large number of roadblocks, and the use of force, tear gas and water cannons against those involved.

“It is our belief that a softer approach would have resulted in less confrontation, fewer injuries and ultimately fewer problems,” she said.

She said apart from the right to assemble peacefully, there were also attempts to curtail their voices from being heard at the assembly.

Ambiga said the calls to use ISA and Sedition Act against three Hindraf lawyers were also retrogressive and counter-productive.
