“Who trains the trainers?”
This was the question echoing through my mind as I made my way to Bar Council on 16 July 2011 (Saturday) for the MyConstitution Campaign’s “Training of Trainers” (“ToT”) session.
The ToT session was conducted by the Bar Council Constitutional Law Committee (“BCCLC”) to train its members to facilitate the “Reconstituting Earth V2.0” workshop module, which had been successfully carried out across the country with various groups, colleges and universities.
Syahredzan Johan, Chairperson of BCCLC, began the ToT session by giving an overview of the impressive list of activities carried out through the MyConstitution Campaign. Leong Yeng Kong, a member of BCCLC, then gave a rousing monologue on why it was important to cherish the rights and freedoms provided under the Federal Constitution, in addition to challenging participants to question their reasons for attending the ToT session.
The ToT session continued with the 20-odd participants being divided into four groups to begin the module. Each group was given a pre-set list of 25 imaginary individuals, from whom participants could choose six to be the sole survivors from post-apocalypse Earth to inhabit a new planet. Participants were allowed to select from a pool of individuals from various backgrounds and with diverse skills or expertise, such as a gay rock climber cum mineralogist, an Orang Asli leader, and even a disabled former foot soldier and sailor. However, the members of each group had to be unanimous in their selection of the six survivors – a task that was tougher than it sounded!
Edmund Bon, a member of BCCLC, then led participants through a review of what they had just done. Next, each group was asked to present the name of their new planet, the six individuals they had selected and the rationale behind their choices. Participants were also informed that the first module explored issues of discrimination, stereotyping and diversity, before they heard an overview of the choices normally made by other participants.
Edmund Bon went on to explain that the purpose of the workshop was to educate and empower participants on the concepts of rights and constitutionalism. Participants later returned to their original groups once again to draft a preamble of the constitution for their respective planets. Samples of the preambles to the constitutions of India, United States of America and South Africa, as well as the Malayan Proclamation of Independence, were made available as examples. One of the teams even had a preamble that was written in Mandarin and translated into Bahasa Malaysia!
At the end of the ToT session, participants were divided into several workshop teams that could be mobilised to conduct “Reconstituting Earth V2.0” workshops in the future. With the trainers duly trained and empowered, it was now upon them to merakyatkan Perlembagaan with the MyConstitution Campaign!
