The Bar Council Constitutional Law Committee (“BCCLC”) was invited to give a presentation on constitutional rights during a slot at the Citizen Empowerment School initiative by the Malaysian Civil Liberties Movement (“MCLM”).  Syahredzan Johan, Chairperson of BCCLC, gave a talk entitled "The Constitution & You", in which he outlined the importance of the Federal Constitution to all Malaysians.  The event took place at 9:00 pm, at the MCLM headquarters, Petaling Jaya, on 15 July 2011 (Friday).

Syahredzan Johan started off by explaining what the Federal Constitution was and gave examples of how it affected the lives of Malaysians without them realising it.  He also discussed the key constitutional institutions and the importance of knowing what their powers and limitations were.  Syahredzan Johan emphasised that it was important for Malaysians to know their Federal Constitution because without knowledge, one would not be able to participate in the discourse.

The nine Rakyat Service Advertisements (“RSA”) were then shown to the audience with a short explanation for each of them.  The session concluded with Syahredzan Johan taking questions from the 30-odd members of the audience present.  There were a lot of questions from the floor regarding fundamental liberties as enshrined in the Federal Constitution.

One especially memorable comment came from a member of the audience who revealed that she used Rakyat Guide booklets as teaching materials in her classes.  Listening to comments like these further motivated members of BCCLC to continue to merakyatkan Perlembagaan with the MyConstitution Campaign.
