The Bar Council Constitutional Law Committee (“BCCLC”) was invited to the Kesatuan Penuntut Undang-Undang di United Kingdom dan Eire (“KPUM”) Law Awards Dinner 2011 at Tropicana Golf and Country Resort, Petaling Jaya, on 25 Aug 2011 (Thursday).  We were given a special slot to present the MyConstitution Campaign to the recipients of the KPUM Law Awards 2011.  BCCLC was represented by Joanne Leong and me (Co-Deputy Chairpersons of BCCLC) and Mohamad Fazli (Bar Council Secretariat).  The event was attended by students, most of whom were still studying law in different universities abroad.  They were selected as award recipients for their outstanding overall achievement, including both academic performance and extra-curricular activities.  Truth be told, I felt honoured to be sitting among the future beauties and brains of the legal profession!

Hoe Yu Li, a member of BCCLC, was the emcee that night.  Just before the presentation of the awards, Joanne Leong took to the stage and gave a brief presentation on the MyConstitution Campaign.  During the first few seconds, I could sense that some of the attendees sitting at my table were trying to figure out how a Bar Council committee’s project, and the Federal Constitution, were relevant to them.  However, Joanne Leong did a wonderful job guiding the audience through what we do, why we do what we do, and why they needed to know what we do.  Judging from the general response afterwards, it was clear that Joanne Leong’s presentation had impacted the audience deeply and had stirred their thoughts on whether or not knowledge of the Federal Constitution was significant to them.  A student in the audience even proposed a future collaboration with BCCLC for a student programme in Cardiff University, Wales!

We were also allocated a booth to promote our merchandise and recruit new members.  The booth was operated by Mohamad Fazli throughout the night.  The sale of our merchandise – especially the t-shirts – and the recruitment of new members were successful.

On behalf of the BCCLC, I record our thanks and appreciation to the KPUM law students for their support in giving us the opportunity to present the MyConstitution Campaign.
