MUSIC is a universal language that enables messages to be conveyed in a fun and creative way.

This is why the Bar Council’s MyConstitution Campaign had chosen music as a channel to educate and empower the youth and create awareness about their rights enshrined in the Federal Constitution.

A 12-hour music marathon called ‘Rock 4 Rights’ was organised by the Bar Council Constitution Law Committee (BCCLC) at Fort Cornwallis in George Town for the first time with 18 bands performing at stage from noon until midnight.

BCCLC chairman Syahredzan Johan said the music marathon held recently was also a launching for the final phase of the MyConstitution Campaign which was initiated two years ago.

The campaign was designed to inform and educate the public on their rights as citizens of Malaysia.

It was done through numerous forums and workshops held across the country.

Deputy Chief Minister II Dr P. Ramasamy who launched the event, said the concert was timely as more and more people started to realise their basic rights nowadays.

“I am proud to see the BCCLC make good use of music as an effective platform to reach out to the young generation,” he said during the launching ceremony.

Besides the live performances, the event also featured Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar who played the guitar and sang songs onstage.

Among bands that performed live were Couple and Bittersweet.

The atmosphere was electrifying as the crowd of 300 were seen clapping, especially when ear-deafening rock songs were performed.

Lim Hui Ling, 24, who is a marketing officer, said she was curious after seeing information about the concert on Facebook.

“I decided to check the event out with my friends as I’ve never attended a concert with a theme based on civil awareness. This is truly interesting,” she said when met at the concert.

Secondary school student Nur Sabira Abdul Rahim, 16, said she passed by Fort Cornwallis together with her parents after dinner and they were attracted to the fancy rock songs.

She said the idea of constitutionalism was instilled at the school but somehow she did not have a clear understanding of it.

“The idea of introducing the Federal Constitution through a musical concert is very good, at least I am one of the youngsters who are sitting here now,” she said.

The musical marathon was organised by the Bar Council in partnership with non-governmental organisations Frinjan and Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia (SABM) and supported by 4G service Yes and news portal Malaysiakini.

The event, which was endorsed by the state government, featured a musical album namely Radio Demokratika comprising 12 songs produced by 12 local independent bands with each song carrying message on human rights, democracy and constitutionalism.
