KUALA LUMPUR: The Bar Council Constitutional Law Committee (ConstiLC) has called for the Federal Constitution to be taught in the classroom.

Committee chairman Edmund Bon Tai Soon said a proposal to the Education Ministry was being prepared to allow the committee's MyConstitution campaign to be carried out in schools.

He said the two-year-old campaign, which seeks to educate the public on the Federal Constitution, was well-suited for schools as it presented information in a fun and accessible manner.

"Our guides present a simplified, but accurate, version of the Federal Constitution, which is easy for the layperson to understand," said Bon here yesterday.

He said this after the launch of the eighth and penultimate phase of the campaign titled "Fundamental Liberties and Citizenship" by Malaysian Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) member Jannie Lasimbang, in conjunction with the International Human Rights Day.

"We have also prepared special modules, which include fun activities and workshops, for students in both primary and secondary schools," Bon said, adding that the campaign's information booklets called Rakyat guides, had undergone rigorous scrutiny to ensure their accuracy.

He said ConstiLC had been encouraged by a statement made by Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong in Parliament last Wednesday that the MyConstitution modules could be taught in schools, provided certain conditions were met.

Bon said it was important for people, especially the younger generation, to be aware of their rights and freedom as citizens as enshrined by the Federal Constitution.

"Many people see the Constitution as a complex and confusing document. Our aim is to promote better knowledge and understanding of the supreme law of the country so that people can make better decisions as citizens."

Some 90,000 of the campaign's Rakyat guides in English and Bahasa Malaysia have been distributed since the first phase was launched in November last year.

The ninth and final phase of the campaign, on elections and democracy, is expected to be launched in March next year.
