KUALA LUMPUR: The Bar Council is aiming to convince the Federal Government to include the Malaysian Federal Constitution and how the country is governed as subjects of study in primary and secondary schools.

“In primary schools, the subject should be taught in an interesting way as a cocurricular subject, such as by way of cartoon and comic strips,” Constitutional Law Committee chairman Edmond Bon said.

The committee, formed under the aegis of the Bar Council Malaysia, recently launched a two-year campaign to educate the general public on the Federal Constitution.

“The campaign is for every Malaysian citizen,” Bon told FMT. “But because the contents of the Federal Constitution are complicated, we are mainly targeting those aged between 15 to 35 at the moment,” Bon told FMT.

According to him, the campaign is trying to reach university students first. This will be followed by secondary schools.

“We’re looking at primary schools in 2011, after the campaign ends, because we have to draft the contents of the programme and conceptualise the Constitution into a cartoon version,” he said.

He added the committee would seek the prime minister’s support for the programme. He said the committee was monitoring the impact of the campaign through websites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

The homepage of the campaign is www.perlembagaanku.com.
