KUALA LUMPUR: Police arrested three opposition figures under the Sedition Act while the Home Ministry seized some 3,000 copies of Opposition party organs as the authorities moved to put a stop to alleged attempts to overthrow the Government through street protests.PKR vice-president Tian Chua, PAS member Tamrin Ghafar and head of the pro-Opposition group Anything But Umno Haris Ibrahim were arrested at three different locations yesterday, said City police chief Deputy Commisioner Datuk Mohmad Salleh. The three were arrested barely a day after student activist Adam Adli was released on bail pending charges under the Sedition Act.Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said all quarters should take responsibility for statements and actions deemed offensive in the eyes of the law.“The moment they open their mouth, they should be answerable for whatever they utter,” he said.

BANTING MURDERS: N. Pathmanabhan, three farm hands gets death

Pathmanabhan to kill cosmetics millionaire Datuk Sosilawati Lawiya in a brutal manner three years ago.The High Court today found that the accused’s unethical decision in acting for two opposing sides in a land deal, as well as acquiring interests in the transactions, had found himself caught in a web of deceit. Judge Datuk Akhtar Tahir, in his brief 15-page judgment which took 50 minutes to read, said Pathmanabhan had appeared for Sosilawati as the seller in a land deal, and had also acted for the buyer, which was Datuk Abdul Rahman Palil, a former assemblyman for Sementa.“The accused’s actions were not only unethical but had also compromised his impartiality. He appeared for both Sosilawati and Rahman Palil in the same deal and by doing so, he was caught between the devil and the deep blue sea,” he said.

Press Release: The Malaysian Bar Commends and Supports MACC's Proposals

The Malaysian Bar commends and supports the initiatives by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission ( “MACC ”) headed by its Chief Commissioner Dato’ Sri Haji Abu Kassim bin Mohamed. The MACC is an important and indispensable institution in the fight against corrupt practices and for the prevention of corruption. The recent proposal by the MACC, through its Consultation and Corruption Prevention Panel (“CCPP”), as reported in the news media on 21 May 2013, that all elected representatives in Parliament and State Assemblies should declare their assets every three years, is a positive step towards promoting good governance, integrity and the rule of law.In this context, the Malaysian Bar proposes that the need to make such declarations not be confined to elected representatives in Parliament and State Assemblies, but be extended to include all public officials. The definition of public officials under Article 2(a) of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption ( UNCAC ), which Malaysia signed on 9 December 2003, and subsequently ratified on 24 September 2008, should be adopted. It defines public officials as:(a) any person holding a legislative, executive, administrative or judicial office; and(b) whether elected or appointed, whether permanent or temporary, whether paid or...

Amnesty calls for repeal of Penal Code amendment

©The Star (Used by permission)by Alyaa Alhadjri

PETALING JAYA (May 22, 2013): Human rights group Amnesty International (Amnesty) has called on the government to repeal Section 124(B) of the Penal Code which provides a maximum 20 years' jail sentence for individuals convicted of involvement in any activity detrimental to parliamentary democracy .The London-based watchdog group said Section 124(B), which came into force in June last year, is overly broad and vague . The provision imposes a chilling effect on free expression in violation of Malaysia's constitution and international legal obligations, said Amnesty in a statement. It (also) gives the police officer absolute discretion to arrest and detain individuals deemed to have committed any act detrimental to parliamentary democracy, said Amnesty. The statement was released following the arrest of student activist Adam Adli Abdul Halim on Saturday for violating Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act and Section 124(B) of the Penal Code.
