The External Liaision Unit of the KL Bar YLC will be visiting universities and private law colleges as part of its "Open Day" programme. We will start with Kemayan ATC this weekend (at Kemayan ATC, Bangunan Tunas Utama, Jalan Petaling) at 10 am until about 1 pm.

Next week, Its UM, followed by UiTM and Help College. We are still liaising with UIA and UKM on suitable dates.

Essentially, we hope to address issues surrounding the practice of law, aspirations and expectations of a lawyer and matters affecting young lawyers and pupils. We have found that in the past, such sessions provide law students with an opportunity to gauge what the life of a lawyer is all about.

In other words we expose them to the practical aspect of the profession, in addition to what they learn from Gower, Cheshire, Fifoot and Furnston, Snell, Grey, Smith and hogan.

Thank you Tuan Haji for agreeing to help us out. It is visionary members like yourself that will continue to ensure that young lawyers are not at all marginalised and disenfranchised.

We try to be an activities based committee. Sadly, there are a few of us who are callow and unable to see through this.

 Re:Close the Young Lawyers Committee!? - 2007/09/07 00:39 Is it the time of the year again? It seems like whenever the Bar council (or at least some of them) run out of things to do, they decide they want to cut the YLC.

Is it due to the budget? How do you decide on which of the committees formed to cut?Or do you judge their relevancy by the work that they have done or how much they have contributed to the bar?

I believe that the answer should be the latter. I'm not saying that the other committees are irrelevant or that they do nothing... I think the rest of you can judge for yourself what they have and have not done.

What the YLC's have done can clearly be seen.
We organise talks,
we have a charity drive,
we go out to the Universities to speak to the students,
we set up a booth with the Bar Council at Career fairs.
We encourage younger members of the Bar to participate in activities of the bar.
We try to help with the identifying of problems faced by young lawyers and try to resolve them.
We did a national survey on the working conditions of the young lawyers to see what problems with regard to working conditions they faced,
We even helped organise 1 day of the MLC (if I'm not mistaken)
We also do interviews of for teh Bar Website (YL personalities) to show what makes the younger lawyers minds tick...

All that was just off the top of my head and all that was done within 1 year! I would like to see the other committees show what they have done in the previous year or the current one!

Are we relevant? Hell yeah!

So to Mr. Ding and the retractors... ask not what the committee or the Bar has done for you BUT what you have done for the committee or the Bar. If you contribute to the various committees then it will be rewarding for you as well (definitely not speaking in monetary terms though ).

It may be that in some states the YLC is just not as active as the KL YLC BUT it does not mean that they do not want to be! They also need the support of the members for it to be active! As Noreen has said... If there are any of you who doubt the workings of the committee then please come join us this coming Friday (14/9/2007) at the Bar Council for our meeting. See first hand what we do. See first hand the people who sacrifice their time and effort to help others who may need the help.

We are relevant! There is no question about it... we have held ourselves out to be accounted for... Show us why we are irrelevant! If you accuse us of something.. proof it! I believe that that is the basic rule of law. We should not be defending ourselves...

Like many other lawyers, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your words of encouragement to the young ones within our midst. I am sure that these words of kindess, support and encouragement are more than appreciated, not only now but in the years to come.

As I have said, while you have identified yourself as a supporter for the young lawyers (no longer defined as in the repealed s.46, LPA), will those who have sought a fresh debate on the existence of the National Young Lawyers Committee please have the decency and courage to identify themselves?

I, for one, want to see how they look like and whether blood does run through their veins. Maybe, it is just tomato ketchup without the viscosity.

saya terlepas pandang posting anda...hati saya berkata-kata "alamak, he's from my state bar lah"..

I dont know whether you've attended the state bar AGM or whether you know who are your state bar committee members. But let me tell you this: out of 10, 5 are young lawyers and our Bar Representative is also a young lawyer and we have been sitting and serving the National Young Lawyers Committee as well as the state Young Lawyers Committee.

The senior members of the state bar committee have been so supportive to the YLC, and it is very disappointing to see the young lawyers themselves cannot appreciate the existence of their very own committee.

Oklah, now, the Perak Bar Human Rights/Legal Aid Committee will set up a legal aid booth at The Store (formerly known as Fajar) in Manjung, near to Sitiawan, few minutes drive from your place on 09.09.2007 at 10am-4pm. So, kindly lend us your helping hand in organising the booth. Oh ya, in case you are unaware, the chairperson of the said committee is a young lawyer, who was trained to be a leader by the National Young Lawyers Committee as well as the state Young Lawyers Committee. The chairman of the perak bar YLC will also be there. So Ding, please come...
