Widow's helpless cry frames powerful call - 2006/08/26 01:16 My dear Mr Minister

Hear the helpless cry of a helpless widow for justice.

Behind that helpless cry is more than the stark, poignant and powerful FACT that Judges who stood by their oath to uphold the Constitution were summarily and cruelly eclipsed in the prime of their careers.

Behind that helpless cry is more than the stark, poignant and powerful CHOICES before us:

(1) Do we as a nation opt for the Rule of Law or the Rule of Men?;

(2) Do we as a nation honour the Separation of Powers between the Legislative, Executive and Judiciary?;

(3) Do we as a nation act on great political principles or on mere political expediency?; and

(4) Do we as a nation honour our loyal sons and daughters or do we relegate them to sheer historical irrelevance?

I do not, for one moment, think that what the Judges have done is dishonourable.
These Judges have risen to the hour and responded to the challenge knowing fully well that they will have to fall on the sword. That was the obvious price.

These Judges paid.

That singular decision alone speaks of their manifest and monumental courage in the face of the powerful challenge.

We as a nation continue to close our ears to the helpless cry of this widow and continue to dishonour the courage of these Judges at the risk of denying the noble values upon which our nation was founded on Aug 31, 1957.

It was a day of pride for me as a seven-year-old child. Thirty years down the road, we Malaysians not only witnessed the day of national infamy but we were robbed of our political innocence.

My dear Mr Minister, please take the road not easily taken to clear this nation of the heinous fraud that we Malaysians never needed. If I may, let me paraphrase Lord Tennyson in The Brook:

“Judges may come, and Judges may go,
But the Court goes on forever …”
