Thank You Roger Tan - 2008/12/01 11:13 It is with great sadness that I read about Roger Tan's retirement as the MBW. Whilst it is not entirely unexpected, I did not realise that it would be so soon and so sudden.

Roger has been pivotal in making the Bar's website what it is today. It is not an easy feat to accomplish. A lot of us consider the Bar website as staple every morning as Roger painstakingly separates the "wheat from the chaff" to provide us with the right and relevant news.

Roger's efforts also allowed us a platform to vent our views, frustrations and intelligence. His efforts in setting up the Bar website also allows us to showcase the Bar's activities to all internally and externally. I dare say despite the often dissenting views by the members, it has brought us closer and appreciative of each other.

Roger, from the bottom of my heart, you will be sorely missed. I wish you success in your future endeavours and thank you for this opprtunity.

I can only hope the new team is half as good as Roger. That way, I can safely say that the Bar website will continue to be as useful as it is today.

many thanks
Dipendra

Re:Thank You Roger Tan - 2008/12/01 17:40 Thank you, Dipendra, for your relevant reminder.

Your initiative has now required me to also, necessarily voice my grateful thanks to Mr Roger Tan for his interest, creativity, hard work and dedication in servicing the needs of our registered Malaysian Lawyers who would like to share their views, and easily too, through our own Malaysian Bar Website.

To manage the Website so successfully for us - who have different tastes and opinions - is not an easy feat indeed!

May we wish you all the best, Roger, in all your endeavours. We hope too, that one day, in the future, when you miss your 'brain-child', you will opt to return again!

Re:Thank You Roger - 2008/12/01 18:42 My dear Roger,

I noticed that there is no provision for comments in the news item that you were retiring … and purposely waited for the first comments to come in. It has been a good four years of continuous effort expended on what, in all candidness I have always felt, was at best a thankless job.

What in the trade we call copy tasting or more popularly known as news selection, then the timely uploading of these selected news items as well as moderating and approving the comments made demand constant monitoring of and access to the website.

The heaviness of such a demand that you discharged single-handedly can be seen in the Secretariat identifying three IT staff members for the job as well as Bar Council Secretary and three of the top Secretariat personnel to moderate and approve the comments made. To me, that decision may well lead to “too many cooks …”

Notwithstanding that, Roger, what cannot be denied is that you have shown Malaysians that a well-run website can provide the Bar with an almost instantaneous communications system. In so far as that is concerned, for four years, the Malaysian Bar was the envy of all professionals in the country and beyond.

While I commend you for creating and donating the website to the Bar, I also hope that those who take over will act to turn this website into a profit centre that it is ultimately meant to be. At the same time, they must maintain the robustness that is reflected in the wide spectrum of comments made so far on so many issues by so many of our colleagues.

Many thanks always for your time, effort and creativity. Your act will certainly be hard to follow. May all your future efforts continue to be showered by Divine Blessings.

Re:Thank You Roger - 2008/12/01 19:29 Yes, thank you Mr. Roger(Moore) Tan!

Once I emailed him for mixing up my posting on some sensitive issue and questioned him whether it was some sort of a censorship.

He mailed back and offered me to take over as MBW citing that he is more than willing to give it up!

Yes,I agree that it is easy to be an armchair critic but filling the shoes of such responsibility, taking up the valuable time from once practice, is no mean fit!

I salute you Roger Tan and wish you well.
