News Flash : 14th Mundiavocat : Lawyers' World Cup, Alicante, Spain 2008 - 2007/04/25 15:45
Dear Members of the Bar,
We succesfully raised enough funds to send the Malaysian Bar Football Team to the 13th Lawyers' World Cup in 2006. It seemed just like yesterday. Now, the journey starts again, this time to Alicante, Spain'2008 for the 14th Edition of the MUNDIAVOCAT.
I have just received the invitation again from the organisers and it promises to be an even bigger and better tournament than the last one, with the introduction of another tournament running concurrently, i.e the MUNDIAVOCAT MASTERS for lawyers aged 35 and above.
Our maiden appearance in 2006 was made possible by the generous contributions of several corporations who truly supported the development of sports in all tiers of society and members of the Bar themselves, including the players. Financially, we all realised that it would be difficult. Let it be known that if not for the trust of our reliable travel agent (who confirmed our flight booking even before a single RM was paid), we would not have been able to confirm our flights to Turkey. The last amount of sponsorship only came in less than a week before our scheduled departure from Kuala Lumpur!! It was a mad rush...no more of that, I say.
To once again compete at this prestigious tournament, we are starting our preparations much much earlier. It was evident that 8 months of preparation previously was insufficient. We now have about 12 months. And we are starting today or at least as soon as we get back from the Bench & Bar Games in Singapore. We would need all the help that we can get from everyone.
So, from today till the tournament in Spain, I will be giving you updates of our progress, both on the field and off the field (especially the fund raising part...) Any assistance would be appreciated. And of course, trials will also be held again for the benefit of everyone. Please contact me.
Our achievements on the field at our first appearance in Turkey was fairly modest (5 wins out of seven) but our performances, off-the-field participation and the respected manner which we conducted ourselves throughout the tournament was an eye opener and clearly well received by the international legal community. The tournament was a big assembly of lawyers from all over the world and for some who were there, it was the first time that Malaysia was introduced to them.
For more information, please log on to www.mundiavocat.com. In the meantime, watch out for this space as we prepare to do battle with the Singapore Law Society on Sunday, 30.4.2007.
