Friday, 2nd March - Confidential Dialogue on Issues Facing Multiracial Society - Please attend! - 2007/02/26 12:45
The Bar is having a confidential dialogue session this Friday, 2nd March at 5 p.m. on "Issues facing a multi racial society" jointly organised by the Syariah Laws Committee, the National Young Lawyers Committee and the Human Rights Committee and moderated by former CJ(M), Tan Sri Annuar Zainal Abidin. As someone involved in work on religious freedom issues, I see a lot distrust and resentment amongst both sides of the various conflicts that seem to be occuring with increasing frequency nowadays. We appear to be talking from completely different world view. I think we need to at least try and understand where we are all coming from. The recent Siri Pemikiran Kritis, and the poll on the Bar Website on the NEP show an ever increasing divide between our different races and religions. Rather than becoming more unified as a nation in this, our Golden Jubilee, we appear to be fragmenting more into our communal classifications.
Dara Waheda and Edmund Bon in their article Menyelami Keperluan Berdialog have also eloquently set out why they feel this dialogue is important. I would therefore urge all those of us who are practising lawyers or pupils to make every effort to participate in the dialogue, and for all of us to please encourage our other lawyer/pupil friends to attend. Please register with the Bar Council early as I understand places are filling up fast. (To register please contact Farha or Lojini at 03-20313003 X 153 or farha@malaysianbar.org.my.) [Please note also that the dialogue is only open to practising lawyers (meaning advocates and solicitors of the High Court in Malaya with a valid practising certificate for 2007) or pupils currently reading in chambers.] Date : 2 March 2007 (Friday) Time : 5.00 - 7.00 pm (to be followed by Dinner) Venue : Bar Auditorium, 1st Floor, No. 13, 15 & 17, Leboh Pasar Besar, 50050 Kuala Lumpur Shanmuga
