Another Video!? - 2006/09/04 18:29
On the 26th August 2006, TV3 broadcasted a video, which looked like a shot from a Police Station's interrogation room. 2 men were brutally kicked, hurled abused and punched.
Recently, the Police disclosed that they have identified the Station to be of Putra Heights, in Selangor and the Police Officers involved were also identified.
If my memory serve me right, this is the 3rd discovery of Police Abuse/brutality Video in recent times. The 1st one is the infamous 'nude-squat' video. I also re-called the Police brutality over the protestors of the anti increased petrol price campaign at KLCC early this year, but that was 'transmitted' at Malaysia Kini.
I am personally appalled with what I saw. We have heard of the rumoured police brutality for a long time, and in the space of 2 years, we get to see 3 video clips of such brutality.
At KL YLC, the Chair of the Human Rights Unit, Dinesh Nair, had initiated a discussion among the Office Bearers of KL YLC which lead to a unanimous vote to condemn this Police brutality incidents. YLC have raised this at KLBC level, and KL Bar will in due time act on this. There is a possibility that KL Bar will demand a meeting with the IGP. The decision of KLBC's next course of action will be released pretty soon.
But at the moment, all I can feel is that it is hard to trust the Police.
I would like to quote a statement by the last terms Human Rights Unit Chair of YLC, Puteri Shehnaz -
"The reputation of our Police can no longer be saved. It must be rebuilt."
Very apt conclusion!
